About
Learn beginning and intermediate gouache in this extended course. Students will have the opportunity to dig deep into the art of watercolor and develop skills in a range of styles and techniques. Some supplies will be provided, however students are encouraged to bring their own supplies for the best experience.
Recommended supplies:
Gouache Paint:
Windsor & Newton or Holbein brands recommended
· Permanent or Zinc White (1.25 oz/37 ml large tube)
· Cadmium Yellow (.47/.48; 14 ml/15 ml tube)
· Lemon Yellow (.47/.48; 14 ml/15 ml tube)
· Alizarin Crimson (.47/.48; 14 ml/15 ml tube)
· Cadmium Red (.47/.48; 14 ml/15 ml tube)
· Cerulean Blue (.47/.48; 14 ml/15 ml tube)
· Ultramarine Blue (.47/.48; 14 ml/15 ml tube)
· Burnt Umber (.47/.48; 14/15 ml tube)
· Optional color: Yellow Ochre
(These are the basic colors that will be referred to in class. Intro starter kits are also available but might include different colors. Also recommend—water-based, not acrylic gouache.)
Brushes:
An assortment of the following (they don’t have to be expensive, and you don’t need them all)—
Rounds: #4, #8, #10, #12
Flats or Filberts: #4, #8, #10, #12
1 large Hake or Watercolor brush about 1”
Palette:
Recommended—Masterson Sta-Wet Palette (or—white enamel pans or white plastic plates work OK.)
Paper:
140# HOT PRESS Watercolor paper 12x16-inch (or 12x18) pad
(Cartiera Magnani Acquerello is a good value. I use Fabriano)
OR Bristol Board (paper) or white, smooth surface matt board pieces and scraps work well for tests/sketches
Miscellaneous:
· Masonite board or other hard surface drawing board (about 18x24 inches)
· 2B pencil and eraser
· ½ or ¾-inch drafting tape or watercolor masking tape
· Plastic containers for water (recycle cottage cheese, yogurt or other containers from your kitchen)
· 1 roll of paper towel
· Tote or bucket for carrying supplies
We will work outside for part of the class, weather permitting. Please bring a hat and sunscreen.
Also--We will break for lunch; please bring a sack lunch.
