Karen Beacom & Friends

Soo Opera director and world-class soprano Karen Beacom performs with pianist Casey Robards, and vocalists Suna and Thom Gunther for a beautiful afternoon of opera and Broadway.

Described as “warm and lyrical with a lot of dramatic power,” Beacom has graced stages internationally, including the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing as soprano soloist in Bach’s Mass in B Minor, and in Italy as the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro. She performs regularly with the Sault Symphony in Ontario, Canada, in works such as Handel’s Messiah and Orff’s Carmina Burana.

Her versatile opera career includes leading roles in Die Fledermaus, The Magic Flute, Cosi fan tutte, Madama Butterfly, and Le Tragedie de Carmen, with appearances at Des Moines Metro Opera, Utah Festival Opera, Opera Omaha, Sun Valley Opera, and the Chautauqua Institution. In 2007, she founded Soo Opera Theatre, where she now serves as artistic director. Beacom holds a Master’s in Vocal Performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Bachelor’s in Harp Performance from DePauw University, and teaches privately and as an adjunct professor at Lake Superior State University.
